What are Shingles and what causes them?

Shingles also called herpes zoster is a reactivation of the chickenpox virus within the body, causing a painful blistered rash.

Anyone who's had chickenpox may develop shingles. Yet It isn't known what reactivates the virus. The painful rash caused by Shingles may appear as a stripe of blisters usually on the trunk of the body, though it can appear in other places. Pain can persist even after the rash is gone (this is called postherpetic neuralgia).
